Instructions:
The shawl is started from the tip and worked in 3 sections, with increases along the right edge. The colors may be changed at the crafter’s discretion, creating stripes, solid sections, or sections of different sizes, as desired. Color changes should always be made at the beginning of the row, on the right side of the piece, leaving a tail of approximately 8 in (20 cm) to be woven in between the stitches when finishing the project.
First section: Cast on 3 sts using US 7 (4.5 mm) needles. The first stitch of every row is always slipped purlwise onto the right-hand needle, as if to knit 1 stitch. On the 2nd stitch, work 1 knit stitch through the front and another knit stitch through the back (1 inc), and knit the last stitch. The wrong side rows are worked entirely in knit stitch (garter stitch). Every 4 rows, work the increase as on the 1st row, then knit to the end of the row. After the 10th garter ridge, work 1 eyelet row, maintaining the increase on the 2nd stitch at the beginning of the row, until you have 48 sts (45 increases). In other words, every 10 garter ridges, work 1 eyelet row (this pattern will continue throughout the entire project, including the following sections).
Second section: Continue knitting in the same manner, however working the increases every 2 rows for 90 x, always on the right side, until you have 138 stitches.
Third section: In this section, the increases will be worked on every row, meaning on both the right side and wrong side rows, for 118 x. On the right side rows, the increases are worked in the same manner as in the previous sections. On the wrong side rows, knit across until 3 stitches remain on the left-hand needle. Work an increase in the third-to-last stitch (1 knit through the front and 1 knit through the back of the same stitch) and finish the row by knitting the last 2 stitches. You will have a total of 256 stitches. When turning the work to the right side, work the picot bind-off as shown in the link above (under Stitches Used).
The shawl is finished. Weave in the ends using the tapestry needle and steam block the shawl, stretching it out with pins to achieve approximately the following shape:
