Materials:
Gauge: 16 sts x 25 rows = 4” x 4” (10 cm x 10 cm) in pattern st using US 9 (5.5 mm) knitting needles.

Stockinette stitch/Knit stitch (k) and purl stitch (p): RS in k, WS in p.Garter stitch: k on both RS and WS.
Pattern stitch, edging, and crochet bind-off: follow the shawl instructions.
Slip, slip, knit (ssk): Slip one stitch knitwise to the right needle, knit the next stitch, then pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch.
Knit 2 together (k2tog): Knit 2 stitches together.
Double slip decrease (sk2p): Slip one stitch knitwise to the right needle, k2tog, then pass the slipped stitch over the stitches just worked.
Instructions
Shawl Beginning:
CO 3 sts (you may use a provisional cast-on) and work 3 ridges in garter stitch (6 rows). On the next row, p3, pick up 3 k sts along the side of the garter ridges (1 st for each ridge), return to the 3 cast-on sts and p them (9 sts total).
WS: p9.
Note: The shawl’s center stitch is described in the pattern as “k1 center” (that is, 1 knit stitch in the center). You may use a marker to identify it in your work.

Next Rows: Repeat R33 through R39 until completing a set of 8 diamonds from the pattern stitch aligned vertically along the shawl length. You will have a total of 325 sts. Then begin the edging.
Edging:
R1 (RS): p3, * yo, k2tog *, repeat from * to * until 1 st before the center st, yo, k1, yo, k1 center st, yo, k1, yo, * ssk, yo *, repeat from * to * until 3 sts remain, p3.
R2 and all even rows: purl.
Repeat these 2 rows 11 more times (24 rows total). You will have 373 sts.
Crochet Bind-Off:
With a G-6 (4.0 mm) crochet hook as if it were a knitting needle, work k2tog through the back loop. Then work: * ch 6, k3tog through the back loop, bind off 1 st by passing the first loop on the crochet hook over the st just worked (sl st) *, repeat from * to * until only 2 sts remain on the knitting needle.
Ch 6, k2tog through the back loop, and finish with a sl st (only at the edges are 2 sts worked together). Cut the yarn and pull it through the loop of the last st.
Weave in ends using a tapestry needle and steam block the shawl, stretching and pinning it to the approximate shape and measurements shown in the diagram below:
